Mastering phonemic awareness skills is key.
It is very important that your child learns and has plenty of practice with phonemic awareness skills for beginning and ending sounds before they reach Kindergarten.
Memorizing the sounds that the letters make, as well as what each letter looks like, is absolutely critical to developing the necessary Kindergarten skills that will help your child be an amazing reader!
There are two very important words/concepts to understand when researching ways to help your child learn to read. Those terms are phonics and phonemic awareness.
Phonics is the study of knowing the sound made by a letter or letter group.
Phonemic awareness is the study of being able to identify where that sound occurs in the word, (for example, beginning – middle or end).
Mastering phonemic awareness is not only helpful when your child is learning to decode new reading words, but is also a critical skill for making educated guesses when spelling unfamiliar words.
Children who have not developed phonemic awareness skills, typically become very frustrated when trying to spell words while writing sentences, and suffer slower reading progress due to the lack of decoding skills they did not acquire prior to entering Kindergarten and beyond.

LET US KNOW
The foundational building blocks of learning how to read for most pre-school and kindergarten age children has incorporated some form of memorization using outdated technology and methods with “sight word” recall tactics. While that is not always a bad way to teach children how to read, it does not help your child with the fundamental understanding of phonics and the skills that are necessary in order to master decoding strategies that will transform their ability to comprehend from the time they start to learn to read and beyond. The literacy stats don't lie. In the USA when 5th graders were tested, the average score for 2016 study found an average of 44% reading proficiency. Clearly something is wrong.
